Chris discusses an unexpected brief pause in regular programming due to a recent house fire.
In this update, Chris discusses an unexpected pause in regular programming due to a recent house fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but smoke has damaged his family's belongings, including his extensive and cherished library collection, which includes numerous rare and out-of-print books. Amid these challenges, Chris previews an upcoming episode featuring Dr. Jackie Grant, Executive Director of the Grand Staircase Escalante Partners, who will discuss efforts to protect the national monument. Tune in next week for insightful discussions on conservation, or support the podcast through their website.

0:00:00 - (Chris): Hey y', all, this is Chris. We are not going to have a full episode this week for a reason that will probably be funny in a couple of years because no one was hurt, but we had a little bit of a house fire and we've been dealing with that and it is complicated. There was no structural damage to our house, which we are incredibly grateful for, but there was a lot of smoke damage. The studio is not affected, so I can record things like this that I'm recording right now without coughing my lungs out.
0:00:29 - (Chris): But we have a lot of stuff to deal with and to tell you the truth, I am mostly concerned about my library. It feels a little silly to be concerned about some books when people that are listening right now might have lost their houses in the Palisades fire or the Eaton fire in Altadena or similar fires. People for that matter are getting rounded up and deported illegally and sent to concentration camps in El Salvador and Cameroon. And here we are sitting in a beautiful place that we're running temporarily. Dogs are fine, no one was hurt like I said. But I have a lot of books and books are really hard to clean from smoke damage and a lot of the books I have are no longer in print. I'd imagined as I was putting this library together that at some point in the next 20 or 30 years I would donate the entire set to a non profit or an academic institution that has an interest in maintaining a desert library. It's a pretty impressive collection of books that I've accumulated over the last 65 years, etc. And I'm honestly a little beside myself about losing some irreplaceable parts of that library. Anyway, that is too much information for an update.
0:01:34 - (Chris): We will be back next week with an interview with Grand Staircase Escalante Partners executive director Dr. Jackie Grant talking about protecting that wonderful national monument. Must see. If it's not on your bucket list, you should put it there once we get our feet undress dealing with the smoke damage. This will be ready for you on Friday, March 6th if you want to help us out. 90miles from needles.com
